Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Raigad District – Historical Introduction

From a historical perspective, Raigad district is very ancient. Its special significance grew during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Raigad Fort (earlier known as Rairi) was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Chandrarao More of Jawali in 1656. In 1674, the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj was held at this very fort, and Raigad became the capital of the Maratha Empire. It remained the capital until 1689. The fort still houses the samadhi (memorial) of Shivaji Maharaj. ...

After the Anglo-Maratha wars, Raigad came under British control in the early 19th century. During the British period, Alibag became the administrative headquarters. After independence, this district was earlier known as Kulaba district; in 1981, it was renamed Raigad district in honor of Raigad Fort.

Raigad district is not limited to history alone but is also extremely rich from a tourism perspective. Major attractions include Raigad Fort, Murud-Janjira sea fort, the beaches of Alibag (Varsoli, Nagaon, Kashid), the scenic hill station of Matheran, as well as the Ashtavinayak temples at Pali and Mahad. Festivals such as Narali Purnima, Ganeshotsav, and Holi are celebrated here with great enthusiasm.

Thus, Raigad district is a priceless treasure in the geography and history of Maharashtra. It offers a unique blend of natural abundance, historical grandeur, and cultural traditions.
